Saturday

I am presently sitting on a ikea cushion at my asian influenced computer desk, staring out the window at a blue sky. asian because it is low to the ground, thus the ikea cushion. It used to be our coffee table. I sometimes find it funny that we have a laptop. Our battery is dead and we don't have wireless. Also this computer has less storage then my ipod, so I am constantly tied to the external. Given these many leashes, this computer is rarely atop our laps. I think my next one will be a desktop, and I will place it atop my desk because that is where it belongs.

I saw pinback last night at fingerprints. It was excellent. They were sitting down so I only caught glimpses from between bobbing heads. I give the new album a solid. My new system of evalutaion employs the states of matter. The cover however, looks like a Creed album. I give it a gas. But we forgive them cause they look like geeks and even acted the part, and for some reason that gives them certain liberties in the realm of cool. Also, their music goes bop bop bop to the rhythm of my soul. Solid.

Stop Now! The Following is Boring!

As you may have read, we had a dog for a couple of weeks. After many issues we were forced into facing the fact that he could not remain in our possesion. But he left us with some great memories, a bag full of Dog Treats, some tears and a few scars on my left hand.

Paper Plane had a show in Fresno this past weekend. hell of a show. The show was on Saturday on what happened to be the hottest day of the year, 110 degrees. Sound check was at 3:00 in the middle of a big, open, hot field. It was the hottest 20 minutes of my life. In the end, we played a marothan show for a bunch of mormons in the hottest of hottness. But I got paid 250 for the whole thing. Does that qualify as selling my soul? (FYI: Next show at Dipiazza's on July 10th, Knitting Factory on the 20th)

We've started summer school at Hope School. It's Awesome. I may not be selling neon, building websites, or making movies but I get toplay all morning long and I'm done by 1:30. Also, just applied to a full time position. If so inclined, pray. Not much difference in pay, but benifits are good.

School in the fall is looking more realistic. I've been accepted to Cal State Dominguez Hills. Yeah Carson. Soon my dream of going to school in every uninspired town in Southern California will be realized. High School in Brea and La Habra, College in La Mirada and Carson. If Only Lawndale had a Graduate School...

oragami flight

Paper Plane has finished a demo of sorts. Check it out on our myspace page. let me know what you think.

I'm in another band, but I'm not sure who we are yet. We have recently entered the witness protection program and have been forced to change our name. You'll know when I know.

The Whiskey a-no-no

we played the whiskey tonight. The whiskey sucks. I don't recommend playing there. It's a glorified chain reaction. everyone's a dick. But we rocked, and people liked us. I'm a clumsy ass bass player though. why does it all gotta be so darn big? Strings, frets, neck, even the knobs are hard to handle. I'm gonna start rubbing my new nioxin shampoo all over my hands and watch them grow. Maybe I'll grow whole new ones. That would be super dope. Then I could do the hand jive.

The band is called paper plane

Realizing that dreams won't be realized.

In 5th grade, I had a friend named Jeff Petis. He was 2 years older then me. We both liked music, bands like Slaughter, Trixter, Another Bad Creation, LL Cool J and the like. I still remember us making up dances to ABC in his bedroom or lip sincing to Trixter. One day we decided to start our own band. We were called High Voltage. We Rocked. We had 2 songs, Love Song and Panic Stage. Some days I can still remember the first couple lines to Panic Stage. Today is not one of those days. After a couple months we decided to learn some instruments. I started taking Guitar lessons and He, drums. Guitar and drums; White Stripes my ass. They totally stole the idea from High Voltage. That was 16 years ago, and still, all I want to do is play music. I wrote some songs the other day. They weren't to far from Panic Stage. Jerry Garcia and Robert, Trey Anastasio had Tom. I'm taking application for a lyricist. Anybody interested?

time upon a once...

I painted this for my brother when I was just a wee lad. We were "dead heads". He was, at least. I was just anything he was. One time he took me to a Bob Weir show. I think it was in VA beach and the name had something to do with strawberries. It was so cool! We smoked and and jiggled our bodies. We got jiggy with it. When we left people were passing out balloons. My brother was so excited. I had no idea he still liked balloons.

When I was in late elementary/middle school I painted. When I painted nobody got real christmas presents from me. mom would take me down to the frame shop and we'd clamp two plates of glass together. I think it was the cheapest frame. I don't paint anymore and my walls are bare, so if you do... Christmas is coming. You don't even have to frame it.

part 4

I had a roommate in college who blew my mind. Everybody "knew" him and everybody "loved" him. He was the life of the anti-party. His sweat was pure amaricana. He played a sloppy guitar and loved old things. Listening to him play was like tapping into the past.

His songs are beautifully ackward, a balance of sense and nonsense, where his only audience is himself. to watch him is to be inspired, to know him is inspiring.

I did not go into work this morning, I'll be going later. Sigur-ros is playing and I am trying to read. I used to think they were called cigerettes and people were just saying it with an accent because the band was from another country and that's how they said it. I thought that was kinda weird... I'm a bit distracted. The gardeners are outside, and the stinch of wet grass is seaping through the open window. It's noisy too. I would close the window but there is a window fan in the way, and that just complicates things. there is a red and green shoebox under our coffee table. my wife is great like that. we also have a picture of a boy on our fridge. she sends money to him every month, and has for years. As for the the festive shoebox, in time it will be filled by my wife with necessities and small toys and sent off to a third world country to make some child happy come christmas. One time when we were "not dating," the time before you're allowed to call it dating, she made me a package. I was flying to see my family for thanksgiving. the package was filled with things to do on the plane; a cd she had received free at some festival, german phrases having to do with travel, conversation starters for the people seated next to me and a note from her. I like her... the gardeners are gone now.

part 3

He can play anything. He came from a musical family like a mini partrige christian. It was in his blood. For years he let me play with him, and much of what talent I have is owed to him. I loved being a part of his musical realizations. He has vision and this vision will make him great. But, know doubt, I will always miss being a part of it.

genius part 1

My grandfather was a great musician, I suspect. He doesn't play a lick anymore. He got scared off by all the Jazz. I don't know this for sure but, like I said, I suspect. He loves to talk to me about music. And when he does his brows raise and his eyes smile. I think he misses the simple joy of playing. He tells me stories of playing piano in the navy until someone suggested, "take it, kenny!"
"Take what, where?"
And as it is with grandparents, I hear this story often. He didn't get it. Improv? He needed direction. Chords. Melody. Notes. But does that mean he wasn't a musician? Does that justify leaving music behind?
In his case, I'm not sure it mattered much. They say he's a genius. And so it began...
